Algeria is accelerating the modernization of its maritime fleet and port infrastructure to establish itself as a key player in the Mediterranean. Abdelkrim Rezal, advisor to the Minister of Transport, has announced a program to acquire 25 ships for Cnan El Djazaïr, aiming to increase the national market share from 3% to 25%.
Port projects focus on expanding capacities with strategic partnerships, such as those with DP World in Algiers and Djen Djen, and Portek in Bejaia. The port of Djen Djen, connected to rail and road networks, aims to become a hub linking northern and southern Algeria to the Trans-Saharan route.
Algeria is also positioning itself on the New Silk Road through collaborations with China on developing port and rail infrastructures. Simultaneously, it is preparing for its integration into the SECA (Sulfur Emission Control Area) zone planned for 2025, by investing in clean fuels and developing bunkering stations.
Finally, the country aspires to become a green hydrogen hub, leveraging its photovoltaic potential, with pipeline projects to supply Europe via Italy, affirming its role in the global energy transition.
